The acerola (Malpighia punicifolia) is a tree whose fruit has the same name and is also called Barbados cherry or Caribbean cherry because it is very similar to the cherry that we usually eat.

Acerola grows wild in the tropical regions of South and Central America, particularly in Peru and the Amazonian forests of Brazil and Venezuela. It is also present in the West Indies where it is called cherry-country.
